He was a Bishop who came from the Umbrain town of Terni, not far from Rome. He entered the priesthood at the age of 25, and was known for his kindness and for the way he was able to transmit love to others.
Valentine was imprisoned by the cruel Emperor Claudius for deliberately disobeying the laws against Christianity. While in prison he cured the keepers daughter of blindness, when the Emperor found out he ordered Valentine to be killed. On the day of his death Valentine wrote a letter to the girl and signed it " from your Valentine ".
St Valentine was also known to have reconciled a young engaged couple by sending a storm of birds to fly above them, hence the reason for the words " love birds."
St Valentine is worshiped all over Italy, you can find the relics of the Saint in churches in Umbria, Sardinia and in the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, a medieval church on the banks of the river Tiber.
